Independence – What does it mean for a toddler?

Independence  in MCC’s Toddler Program means to use language to communicate, to build self-help skills such as toileting, and to begin to experience one’s desires in relation to others.

What are our goals for our toddlers?

• To begin to engage in cooperative acts with teachers and peers.

• To begin to verbally express emotions and self-regulate.

• To respond to others and develop awareness of behavior and its effects.

• To use language to communicate one’s wants and needs.

• To build self-worth and see oneself as a member of the group.

How do we teach these skills?

• Teachers provide simple directions and model language for peer

   interactions.

• Teachers prompt children to describe their feelings and support problem

   solving.

• Our environment supports and our teachers reinforce positive

   behavior development.

• Teachers model and encourage children to use their developing

   language skills to communicate.

• Teachers individually challenge each child’s self-help skills and lead

activities that promote awareness of others and responsibility to the group.
