Preschool - Social Emotional
Independence – What does it mean for a preschooler?
Independence in MCC’s Preschool Program means developing proficiency in self-care skills, beginning to play cooperatively with others and solving problems verbally through teacher assisted discussion.
What are our goals for our preschoolers?
• To engage in cooperative play with and without teacher support.
• To verbally express emotions and regulate frustrations with teacher support.
• To recognize others’ thoughts and feelings and begin to respond appropriately.
• To begin to solve social problems with teacher support and to develop awareness of
being a group member.
• To build confidence in one’s skills and offer assistance to others.
How do we teach these skills?
• Teachers model language for peer interactions and structure
cooperative activities.
• Teachers prompt children to name their feelings and support
them in managing emotions.
• Teachers cue children to look at, listen, and respond to each
other.
• Teachers elicit children’s awareness of their peers and guide
problem solving.
• Teachers individually challenge each child’s skills and encourage
helping others to promote awareness of others and responsibility
to the group.
