Infant - Intellectual

Our infant teachers help lay a strong base of fundamental cognitive knowledge through novel and repetitious activities while also establishing the expectation that children are active participants in their own learning through asking questions and scaffolding skill development.


Below are our infant goals for each of our content areas and some examples of our curriculum activities.

Natural Science:

Inquiry Skills

• Shows interest and explores novel objects and toys.

• Performs simple actions to make things happen and displays a beginning

   understanding of cause and effect.


Living Things & Their Environment

• Uses senses to explore the environment.

• Listens to teacher’s sensory vocabulary and responds to teacher’s prompts.

• Observes and listens to teacher describe how natural habitats provide for the

   basic needs of plants and animals with respect to shelter, food, water, air, and


• Observes changes in appearance that animals and plants go through as the

   seasons change.


Language Arts:


• Follows verbal directions from a teacher.

• Uses known sign-language to communicate needs and wants.

• Engages in expressive babbling and uses first words.

• Makes eye-contact when being spoken to.

• Points and gestures to direct someone’s attention.

• Responds to teacher’s questions and actions.

• Initiates engagement with others.

• Listens to teacher’s daily narration filled with nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs,

   and prepositions.



• Shows interest in a wide variety of simple print and picture books.

• Listens to teachers read books individually, in a small group, in both a quiet

   and interactive manner.

• Explores books independently.

• Begins to make the connection that print has meaning through books and

   environmental signs.



• Holds and uses writing utensils to make lines, dots and circles.

• Participates in fine motor activities to strengthen muscles.



Attribution & Classification

• Manipulates toys and books of various size, shape, color, texture, and


• Participates in teacher directed games of classification i.e. builds a tower

   using yellow toys, fills a bucket with balls.

• Listens to teacher talk about comparing and contrasting objects.


Number Sense

• Engages in one-to-one correspondence play.

• Use sign-language to signify “more”.

• Listens to teacher description and identification of numbers 1-10.



• Stacks and nests toys.

• Experiences patterning, sequence, and order through bouncing, rocking,

   clapping, stacking, and lining up toys.


Spatial Sense

• Explores space in relation to one’s body.

• Explores differences in size/space with a variety of toys and materials.




Social Science:

• Actively searches for desired people and items.

• Recognizes and demonstrates a response to favored people, songs, and things.

• Searches for missing or hidden favorite objects.

• Imitates hand motions of teacher.

• Observes people and begins to notice how they react.

• Discovers repeated actions yield similar results and performs an action to get

   a resulting event to occur.

• Demonstrates awareness of a problem and imitates how others solve problems.

Engineering and Physical Science:

• Recognizes patterns in the environment.

• Explores and manipulates objects of different size and shape.

• Develops awareness of similarities and differences in objects.

• Becomes aware of different amounts of things.

• Begins to learn how objects work through observation and handling.

• Uses simple tools.
